Waterproofing- How waterproof, and Wattage comparison to SRM

Hi Jim, Just about ready to lodge an order through an american supplier, for a quark system. I live in Australia. The SRM can have issues with water infiltration if you take chainrings off and break the seal. Also, if bike is on car roof, then a plastic bag is required to keep the SRM waterproof. Is the quark waterproof to a certain depth in water ??, or how does it stack up against SRM's water issues. Also, Jim, I cannot find any good comparison checks of Quark to SRM wattage comparisons, both for general wattages and peaks and down hills etc. Could you make a comment or point me in the direction of a good report.

Thanks John Hunt Australia

I've heard of those issues about the SRM and emailed Mieke about it with the Quarq. I seem to remember her saying it should be fine, and I've never had issues with mine on a roof, but having said that, if you're driving through a tropical storm, it might be good for you're whole bike to be protected inside the vehicle!

As far as water proof, I've never used mine under water, but it has been in some absolutely horrible rain storms and held up just fine, very impressed on that front!

I doubt if you'll find much comparison to an SRM, as they cannot both go on the same bike at the same time, but here's a comparison to a powertap from a quick google search. http://dessat.blogspot.com/2008/12/quarq-vs-powertap-comparison.html They are all going to be around +/- 2%. Not that this is actual data or anything, but often when riding with some of my teammates who have SRMs, we'll compare average power on climbs, and they always seem to makes sense. If I'm a little heavier (maybe 5 lbs) than one of them and we climb for a good period of time at the same pace, my avg. power will be about 15-20 watts higher, which seems to make sense to me. Anyway, hope that's helpfull and that you enjoy your Quarq!

To give you my experiences. I've had a Quarq (FSA TEAM ISSUE) installed for 17months.

I commute rain, hail or shine and frequently travel with bike on car roof without bothering to look at the weather forecast.

I can say that I've ridden the bike in the most appalling wet weather conditions and I've never had a problem with water ingression.

The only time I notice abnormal power readings is when i'm travelling between regions where there is a large temperature variation, and at that point i just "re-zero" the cinqo and the values return to 'normal'.

Stuey and Daveb, I'm glad to hear about your experiences - looks like I might be doing a century in some heavy rain tomorrow, and I was worried about my Quarq.

Knowing that you've both ridden through a lot of rain with yours is helping me to make the decision to just go ahead and "take the plunge"...

Every Quarq power meter is submerged for 20 minutes before it leaves the factory and tested before and after. You can safely ride a century in heavy rain. --Troy@Quarq

After two separate rain storms I unfortunately have a quarq that quits working. First time out it dried out and after a couple of days started to work on it's own. This last rain storm that I rode through, not such good luck. Been three weeks, and still no power.

Any tips I can do on my own before going back to the bike store for a replacement unit?

Hi, Have now owned ny quarc for nearly 2 years and are extreamely happy with it. It has not missed a beat. Heat, water, dust, very reliable. Our state institute of sport is now using them as well.
