Calibration Numbers on Garmin Edge 500

I have been using a Cinqo for about 2 months now first with an iAero and recently paired with a Garmin Edge 500. In the first few weeks after pairing with the Garmin when I calibrate I received numbers between 24-29 - consistent. This past week I have been seeing values around 4-5, 100-170 and 350 .

Based upon the following from the support link;

"Strain Gage Strings: The strain gage strings measure rider torque and are required to properly measure power. The best measure of the health of the strain gage strings is the ‘Calibrate’ command. If the Calibrate returns a value in the range of +/- 500, then the strain gage strings are healthy. A CinQo that returns a +/- 32,000 value is permanently damaged and must be replaced."

What am I seeing as a calibration value being returned on the Garmin?? At times I see the wattages begin to drop despite the effort level and power reading on a Tacx Flow staying the same. After I stop and pedal backwards 4 revolutions, things seem to come back to normal.

Thoughts??

Thanks

Jack

Hi Jack,

The calibration value is actually the zero offset in 1/32 Nm. It's normal for it to vary a bit from day to day, but a change from around 4 or 5 to 350 over a day or two is a bit more than we like to see even though all the values you've seen are still within the normal operating range.

Make sure your chainring bolts are all still tightened to 10 Nm if they are steel or 8 Nm if they are alloy.

Keep an eye on it for a few days and if it still seems like it is shifting around a fair amount let us know by sending an email directly to us at thinkfast at quarq.us .

You did the right thing by backpedaling when you felt your power was off. However, if you find yourself doing that very frequently throughout a ride, let us know because we may want to get the unit back for evaluation.

Thanks, Mieke

I have had my Cinqo since early December with a Garmin 500. Over time, I've watched the calibration number gradually drift from an initial -300 to just outside -500, where it stayed for a week or two. I corrected it by pulling and cleaning each of the chainring bolts. I then very carefully reinstalled them, first snugging them, then torquing to 10 N.m using the opposing star pattern. The cal value is now coming in at 25.

I've also lately seen it taking a very long time to reply in the manual calibration, sometimes up to a full minute. Is this a low battery issue? It's got about 200 hrs on it.

I have just bought a new SRAM Quarq and wanted to install it yesterday getting ready for the spring here in Scandinavia... Well paired with an Garmin Edge 500 I got Cadence readings but no Power..Calibrated via the garmin after 5 full reverse rev's..got a 31240 Calibration ( this is a fixed value no matter how many times I do the calibration ) Using GXP Ceramic BB Cups...yak this should be -500 / +500 and I get NO Power Readings only cadence!! The quarq has never been used installed before. What's wrong??

R1S - I recall a message somewhere on here from Mieke maybe, suggesting that any unit returning an offset of 31000 is damaged and must be returned. Contact quarq customer service direct and they should be able to sort you out quickly.

Thanks benlane, I have seen the offset mentioned when being damaged to be 32000 but as you see mine is pretty close to that limit...but I am a bit mystfied..Never been installed or used and - well I guess - damaged directly from dealer ??

In the past that value would indicate a problem with the CinQo for sure. However, some of Garmin's more recent firmwares will throw bad calibration values every now and then. If you get a chance, can you check your CinQo with another ANT+ head unit (perhaps a friend's Garmin) and see if you get the same results?

Otherwise call or email our customer service and they'll try to help you out.
