Issue with FSA Crank

Hi,

I love my cinqo but just recently the bolt on the left crank arm keeps backing out after a few rides; it had been perfect for 6 months.

One bike shop suggested a longer bolt, specifically the K-force bolt but I would expect that everything should just work.

I am riding on a '09 BMC Pro Team Machine.

Cheers Nick

Have you tried Loctite on the bolt?

I understood that Loctite was for the spline and not the bolts?

Do you have a torque wrench? IIRC the bolt is tapered; either way Loctite will help you keep the bolt in place. It will just take more elbow grease to back it out when needed.

What splines do you mean, the ones on the outside of the crank spindle? If so, no - grease/oil goes there depending on who you ask. I use grease on the splines and Loctite on the bolt threads with no issues after having that bolt back out on me more than once when tightened to spec. I also have one of the original yellow spider'ed' FSA cranks with DA rings on it.

loctite 241 on the nut (blue stuff). loctite 641 (honey coloured bearing fit stuff) on the splines. my work bike has these cranks on and they have been used 2hrs a day every day for the last year with no problems.

To clarify, it doesn't back out when tightened to spec and with Loctite, it backs out without Loctite. I don't know about the cost of the yellow Loctite but I know grease is pretty cheap :-)

from the fsa installation instructions.....(pdf on the web)

Do not apply grease on MegaExo carbon crank splines. Apply assembly/retaining compound such as Loctite 641 (provided)

Thanks guys that clarified things for me. I just want to say that the Quarq team have been great with their customer service. If I cant solve the problem they will replace immediately. Two thumbs up.

FSA can't measure 10s chain widths properly, I don't trust them when they tell me to "glue" my crank onto the bike either. This will just turn into another Shimano BB grease or no-grease [or in this case, Loctite] argument. I've been using grease for quite a while with no issues since putting Loctite only on the bolt.

hi, just to check. am i able to use the shimano BB for the fsa team issue crankset instead?

No, all both the FSA Team Issue and the FSA SL-K are only compatible with the supplied BB.

I recently tried to fit the FSA team issue crankset onto Shimano Dura-ace BB and true enough, it doesn't fit. However, when i use the BB-8681 meant for SLK-Light Mega Exo cranks, it works.

I will have to test this out for a few rides to see if there's any issue. I read from FSA site that, the Team issue BB (8060) has an additional sleeve to prevent overtightening of the BB, this is what i am more concerned about: overtightening the current BB (8681) .

Meanwhile, does anyone know if the FSA team issue accepts any other BB? I am asking because, the team issue BB is really hard to get, moreover the ITA thread one. That's why I tried to use shimano BB to see if it works, since is cheap.

I also have a FSA Team issue crank that I wanted ceramic bearings for. The BB-8060 is the only bottom bracket suggested by FSA that I see. Can you use the BB-8000? What is this "metal sleeve"? I have several bikes and will be moving the Crank with the CinQo back and forth between my Tri bike and road bike. I want to make this as easy as possible without damaging the Power meter from multiple removals and "tapping" the axel to get it out of the bearings. I will have a separate BB for each bike and just move the crank.

Any suggestions on some tool to press the axel out of the bearings rather than tapping with the vibration going into the strain gauges of the CinQo?

The FSA Team Issue crank requires the specific BB-8060 which unfortunately does not come in ceramic.
