Garmin 500 founds and calibrated, but no cadence and power on display

Hi,

Yesterday I paired my Quarq with a Garmin 500 as usual. I then calibrated and all worked well. I then started riding but no cadence or power information showed on the display. It's clear the unit is transmitting and being found by the Garmin 500 and it worked well on a ride the previous day with no problems. Just when I did it this morning no data was returned. I didn't do anything to the bike or Garmin 500 between rides. Any ideas what to look for?

I had the same problem. It's probably the magnet around the bottom bracket. If you're not using the bb mount then it may take 2+ magnets to get it close enough to the sensor ring to pick it up. If the magnet is not picked up then no power can be calculated even though the computer is found. Check out the user manual pages 4-7. http://www.quarq.com/i/CinQo_User_Guide_SRAM.pdf Hope that helps.

Also, check your Edge 500 firmware version is version 2.2 or higher. Let us know if the problem persists. - Jim

I am having this problem now, too. I am a Garmin 500 with firmware v2.3 and a s975. The unit will occasionally show power and cadence but only for a second or 2 and then nothing. The magnet is glued to the frame and is very close to the raised ring as instructed. I have tried standing next to bike while on a stand and holding the computer close the cranks while pedalling to be sure it's not a distance issue. Batteries are fresh. The head unit pairs, detects, and will display a calibration number of around -525. When I start pedaling....nothing....

I also have this problem, with a newly purchased second hand Quarq Cinqo and Garmin Edge 500 with firmware 2.3. The units pair, calibrate successfully, stay connected. The magnet is positioned using the bb mount and I've tried all of the obvious things like resets and eliminating other ant+ devices. Something I've found is that I can manipulate the calibration numbers by putting various levels of pressure on the pedal - so it seems like the strain gages are working. Did any of the other posters resolve this problem? Or has anyone got any ideas?

I've managed to fix this problem with my set-up. I replaced the battery in the Quarq (which was down to 2.2 Volts according to a multimeter) and also placed a second magnet on top of the existing bb mounted cadence magnet (so now the gap between the magnet and sensor is about 3 mm. The power readouts have worked flawlessly for a couple of test rides over the weekend.

I had the same issue as numbat (no power or cadence from time to time despite proper pairing and calibration). After adding a 2nd magnet adjacent to the 1st magnet (not enough room to stack the magnets between the frame and the Quarq), my problems seem to have gone away. I did not need to change the battery. I will re-post if the problems arise again.

FYI, my bike setup: - Quarq Cinqo with Specialized Cranks (BB30) and SRAM Red Sprinter Chainrings on Specialized Tarmac (52cm) - Garmin 500 with firmware 2.3 upgrade

"I replaced the battery in the Quarq (which was down to 2.2 Volts according to a multimeter)"

Thanks! Same situation, set up the Quarq and no problem, synced up immediately. A week after installation, no more power/cadence. battery read 2.0 Volots using a meter.

New battery and I'm back in business!

I am getting the same problem on my 310XT. The unit finds the quarq fine, and I can calibrate (although sometimes it takes a long time to calibrate, so I have to turn off the garmin and on again, then it will calibrate in a couple of seconds). But during the ride it will stop transmitting power and cadence for extended periods. Occasionally it will begin transmitting again (at reasonable values) but will drop out again. Dropouts can last anywhere from a minute to an hour. This is really frustrating. It happens on both my bikes (one has the magnet fixed to the frame using adhesive, the other I have moved the magnet closer with still the same problem).

I don't understand why this is happening all of a sudden, I have had a good six months of use without any troubles. It has only started happening in the last two or so weeks. I have replaced the battery, but this does not help either. My garmin is running v3.00.

Please help, I am getting really frustrated with this!!

A couple things to check. Make sure your battery contacts are raised enough to make good contact. Check to ensure there are not cracks in your battery lid. Check the settings on your Garmin and make sure it is not set to look for a HR strap or speed/cadence sensor that isn't there (make sure cadence sensor is turned to "off" since you are getting cadence from the CinQo).

You may want to try and do a hard reset on your Garmin or try another head unit to rule out possible issues with your computer. To do a hard reset: start with your Garmin off and hold down the mode and power buttons simultaneously until the "User Data Clear" message appears. Select Yes on this menu.

You should make sure all your ride files that you want to keep are downloaded before you do the hard reset.

Ok thanks for the reply - I will try this. The battery cover is good, and the connections look good. I will try the hard reset and see if that fixes things and report back. Thankyou!

I had this same problem after the recent firmware upgrade and did a reset by hitting all four buttons. This cured the problem

Hi Mieke - I have tried all of your suggestions, and I still get the problem.

jtljohnson - Thanks for the suggestion, I may try this - but I have only recently started having this problem - it has been working fine with the software upgrade up until a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Mieke,

I have tried everything and am now at my wits end. Could you please tell me where I can send it to get it fixed. I am in australia.

I'm having similar problems, tried all of the tricks on here but no joy, also can changing chainrings affect readings?

Gizmo, contact our customer service directly. Right now via phone is best as we are backlogged with our emails. If you use the same model and tooth count of rings, you can put new ones on without affecting the readings. Just make sure to retorque all the bolts to 10Nm. If you are chainging tooth count and brand/model of rings, it's likely your readings will be affected. We offer free calibration in that case.
