1) Save the firmware to your computer (Desktop is always an easy place to find it).
2) With the Garmin turned off, plug it into your computer with the USB cable.
3) A window should pop up with a Garmin folder present.
4) Open the Garmin folder by double clicking on it.
5) Click and drag the attached gupdate.gcd into the Garmin folder (it should ask to replace the current file; say yes when it does).
6) Unplug the Garmin and turn it back on. It should say something like "updating software".
7) Once the update is complete, do a hard reset on the Garmin this way: turn the unit back off. Once it's off, press the "mode" button while turning it back on and follow the prompts. Note: this may erase your current files and settings, so download any outstanding files that you want to keep first and make note of your settings.
8) Once the reset is complete, follow the steps in the manual to check that the firmware is updated, as well as for "Recommended Settings".
*Make sure you have the unit set to record every second; do not use smart recording: Menu - Settings - Data Recording - Record Data Points (Every Second)
